Robert A. Giuffra is an ABS Corporate Officer. He currently serves as the classification society’s
Senior Vice President, Service Delivery. Prior to this position he held the position of Chief Engineer and Vice President Technical Consistency and Total Quality Management.
During his 45-year plus career at ABS he has held a number of increasingly senior positions, beginning with machinery design verification duties, before being appointed to lead Technical Consistency in 1991. His experience covers mechanical design analysis and verification, specification development, engineering analysis and trouble shooting as well as technical management. His responsibilities included the technical content and operating system provision for over 450 engineers worldwide, and the application and maintenance of the ABS global quality and environmental management systems in compliance with the relevant ISO, IACS and governmental requirements.
Giuffra has been an active participant in many industry associations throughout his career including serving on various technical panels of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the American Society of Testing Materials, advisory committees to the American Gear Manufacturer’s Association. He has played an active role within the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) including chairing Quality Committee for four years, taking on the Chair of the General Policy Group in 2015 and has participated in various technical Working Parties. Giuffra has also been a member of the US Delegation to IMO) in the development of the Recognized Organizations Code and has received the USCG Meritorious Public Service Award in 2012.
Giuffra is a graduate of the Stevens Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He holds additional qualifications gained at the MIT Sloane School, from the American Management Association and the Institute of Management Studies among others.
